How To Install Backer Rods

April 21, 2022

Construction is an industry that demands utmost perfection. Engineers, architects, and contractors work together with meticulous planning to ensure flawless execution. Any mistake in construction can severely affect the health of the building, leading to fatal accidents and huge losses.

Cracks are a severe threat to the condition of a building. Even the smallest cracks in the wall or the expansion joints can expand with time if not taken care of. Engineers rely on backer rods to create a backstop and limit the usage of caulking while fixing such joints and cracks.

These rods are made using polyethylene foam and are round and flexible. When properly installed, the foam rods do an excellent job of dealing with cracks and helping you apply sealants on an uneven surface.

Steps for Backer Rod Installation

Safety first: Wearing latex gloves and safety glasses is important. While working with sealants and foam rods, you need to be careful and prepared.
Clear the joint of dust and debris: Use a brush or an air blower to clear the desired area of dust and debris. The backer rod and sealant won't be able to properly fix the cracks if they aren't cleaned first.

Use a blunt tool: Use a blunt tool or a roller to appropriately push the backer into a crack or joint. An important tip to keep in mind while doing this is to make sure the backer rod is not pushed too much into the gap.

Use good quality sealant: Polyethylene foam rods are compatible with latex, polysulfide, acrylic, urethane, and silicone sealants. The quality of the sealant has a direct impact on the durability of the foam rods.
