Some Lesser-Known Benefits of Using a Backer Rod

April 26, 2018

Typically, a backer rod is used for concrete precast building. Inserted between concrete panels to fill in the gap, it acts as a ‘backer’ till the caulking is applied. Thus, it helps save caulking material, provides additional insulation and blocks drafts, useful in window installations.

A backer rod is also commonly used by builders in different sizes of control units or expansion units.

A backer rod acts as a bond breaker that reduces the depth of the adhesion side of the sealant. These materials are used by builders for numerous projects, being preferred for their flexibility. Aside from their primary functions, they are also used for other benefits that they offer. We discuss what some of these additional benefits are, and why most builders use backer rods:

  • Increase Stability - Most contractors use backer rods along with mortar to increase the stability of the structure. With this, the entire structure will be more stable and durable.
  • Increase Precision - Contractors also use backer rods because they increase efficiency and precision of the construction project. Resulting in a better quality result.
  • Saves Time - Sealants takes a while to dry up depending on the size of the cracks, but using backer rods expedites the entire process, allowing the contractors to save time and speed up the phase of their operation.
  • Increase Sealant Life - Built and engineered with an average hourglass shape factor, these a backer rod increases the life of sealants, reducing the future maintenance expenses that the structure will require.
  • Flexibility and Versatility – A backer rod are flexible and can be used for various projects or applications. Some contractors used them for counter tops, window sealing, wall panel decorations, and stoneworks.

Alcot Plastics developed exclusive foam extrusion technology which ensures efficient production of high quality backer rods. Our single screw extrusion has numerous benefits over conventional technologies, especially in terms of time savings.
