The Different Types of Backer Rods and Their Applications

October 05, 2016

Backer rods are small rods that are made of foam material. They are often used as a filling in joints and fissures that are found mostly on tiles as well as other crevices resulting in the construction of structures. The backer rods are inserted as filling inside the grooves before builders apply mortar and any other types of sealant on the existing cracks present in between materials. These rods are not only useful and serve as a handy tool for workers but it also makes the materials used on the structure more stable and the construction more precise. Not to mention it saves a lot of time on the workers end if they use the rods as fillers.

There are two different types of backer rods available commercially – the closed cell rod and the open cell rod. The two can be used interchangeably but there is specific environment wherein each will work best. If you are looking for filler for indoor use then the open cell rod is best because there is less moisture in comparison to outdoor use. For fillers to be used in patios, walkways and pavements that are located outside then it is ideal to use closed cell rods due to its certain properties such as insulation and waterproof.

Backer rods are used to fill the gaps between two materials that are needed to be joined for construction. The foam rods that are used in construction are not only for filling application but these are also used by builders in many other applications. The most common applications of foam rods include flooring and tiling. Other applications can vary from decorations applied on wall panels, employed in countertops, sealing windows as well as various stone works. The rods were designed specifically as filler for joints as well as fissures found between materials before the caulking or chinking material is applied to finish the filling process. The gap is then ensured that it is airtight and waterproof due to the filling added in between. The finish product will be firmer because of the foam rods.

The foam rods are available commercially in different diameters ranging from one fourth of an inch to four inches and some are even bigger. The size of the foam rods you will purchase will depend on the application. If you have no idea on how to buy the right size, always ask someone who knows.

The main difference between open and closed cell rods is the density. Open cell offers a breathable material while closed cell rods are denser as well as firmer. It is easier to bend an open cell because of its flexibility and softness thus it is easier to install. If you purchased an open cell that has a larger diameter than the gap then it can be compressed to fit in. It is considered to be versatile thus can be used in a variety of projects. Closed cell rods are intended for outdoors and heavy duty applications.
